Lillian Moore Bradshaw
Doctor of Humane Letters  1990
Status: conferred

Civic leader, supporter of the arts, activist in the preservation of historical sites and records, inspiration to professional women, and nationally recognized leader in making public libraries more than storehouses of knowledge, Lillian Moore Bradshaw has had a long and distinguished career in the service of our city, our region, and our nation. As Director of the Dallas Public Library, she ushered it into a new era of providing information services for the broadest possible public. She has always resisted misguided efforts at censorship and, instead, has encouraged young and old, men and women, affluent and poor to see libraries as a vital part of daily living. Her leadership has also resulted in many of her former associates becoming heads of major libraries in Texas and elsewhere in the nation. In honoring Lillian Moore Bradshaw, Southern Methodist University recognizes a person who embodies the educational ideals it affirms, and we proudly confer upon her the degree of Doctor of Humane Letters, honoris causa.
